Urban Canopy Regeneration
About Our Work to Replenish the Canopy
‘Green Spaces’ not only enhance the look and feel of a community, they add health benefits as well. As a gathering space, they can strengthen social ties and build bridges among residents and visitors while encouraging free exercise. ‘Green Spaces’ curb the impact of extreme heat in urban environments and improve the quality of air we breathe. These are just a few reasons to focus on the many trees on our campus. The extensive growth of English Ivy, originally cultivated in the 1900’s for manicured grave coverings, is harming many of our Old Growth Trees. Invasive plants like Japanese Knotweed, Poisonous Hemlock and Amur Honeysuckle have also flourished on the cemetery’s grounds. All of these plants cause a decline in species diversity and burden our fragile ecosystem.
Did you know that the cemetery has a Natural Wetlands from the Dietz Basin on its grounds?
Invasive growth
$500.00
- Your gift will help us to remove the entire root system of these hearty invaders without the use of chemicals.
- Cutting ivy growth at the base of the tree separates it from its food and water supply, allowing it to die without chemical treatments.
New Tree
$750.00
- The cemetery loses around twenty of our ‘Gentle Giants’ each year to wind and storm damage, ground erosion, disease and invasive plants.
- Your donation allows us to have a new native tree professionally established on the grounds, filling in where ‘Old Growth Trees’ have been lost.
Removal
$1500.00
- In 2023, the cemetery paid over $47,000.00 to third party contractors to cut down and remove dead or fallen trees.
- Your gift will help the cemetery with tree removal and stump grinding to maintain the vibrancy of the grounds.
